What to Expect From Life Insurance Underwriting

October 19, 2026 ยท 4 min read

Underwriting is how an insurer decides whether to offer you coverage and on what terms. It is often the part of buying life insurance people know least about, and it is usually less intimidating than it sounds.

The application

You answer questions about your age, occupation, finances, family medical history, personal health, tobacco use and activities such as aviation or dangerous sports. Answer completely and accurately. Incomplete or inaccurate answers can lead to a delayed decision, a claim dispute or a policy that does not perform the way you expected.

The medical part

Depending on the insurer, your age and the amount of coverage, the process can include a brief health questionnaire, a phone interview, a review of prescription and medical records, and sometimes an exam with a paramedical examiner. The exam commonly includes height, weight, blood pressure and blood and urine samples.

Some insurers offer simplified processes for certain ages and amounts, with fewer or no exam requirements. These may have lower maximum amounts or different pricing, and availability varies by insurer and product.

How long it takes

Timing depends on the insurer, the amount and whether medical records have to be requested. Simple cases can move quickly. Cases with a complicated health history can take longer. We keep you informed and tell you what the insurer is waiting for.

The decision

The insurer may approve coverage as applied for, offer it on different terms, ask for more information or decline. If an offer differs from what you applied for, we explain why and what your options are, including whether another insurer might view your situation differently.

How to prepare

Gather the names of your doctors, your medications and approximate dates of major medical events. Be ready to talk about family history. Tell us about anything you are unsure of before you apply, so we can help you choose an insurer and a process that suits your situation.

Common questions
Will my doctor be contacted?

Often the insurer asks for medical records with your written authorization. Ask us what to expect for your particular application.

Can I apply with several insurers?

Yes, in many cases. A broker can compare insurers before an application is submitted so that you apply where your situation is most likely to be viewed fairly.
